Hi Susa Alcami and Juan Molina,

I have very little knowledge about starting work in another country, and I have some naive questions for you. I am still finishing up my PhD here, and have not yet had my oral defense, but will soon. Perhaps some of these questions are better for other people who would know more about the specific topic, but if you conveniently have answers that would be great! Here are my questions:
  1. What will my salary be as a post-doc in Dr. Blasco's lab? Perhaps you do not have an exact number, but you might have an estimation about the amount.

  1. Do I need a working VISA in order to start work in Spain from the United States? Is there any other type of card or form that I am forgetting about? Note that I already do have a passport.
  2. Do you have the contact information of an American student at the NCIO I could contact if I need any help or have questions? Is there an American student in Dr. Blasco's lab?

  1. Are there apartments very near to the NCIO? I believe I would like to live very close to the research center since that is where I will spend most of my time. What are the typical monthly rates of apartments?
  2. What types of items can a person take with them when moving to another country and about how much would this cost? For example, I have a desktop PC I think I would like to ship over with me. I have other items I might want to take as well such as a bike and a tv. However, perhaps it is unreasonable to take these larger items. This question might be more appropriately directed to the airport or the shipping company I suppose.
  3. Which cell phone companies in Madrid provide good coverage within NCIO and in general? My current cell phone carrier provides good coverage around the city, but not in my research lab, and I was not aware of this before getting that plan.
Thanks for any help and information you have to offer me!
