Does it make a difference to do a "hot start" with PrimeSTAR Max? In
other words, does the PCR reaction have higher quality if the polymerase
is not added until the reaction has already reached denaturation
temperature (around 98 C)?

The answer to this question appears to be: No. This is likely because

the PrimeSTAR reaction mixture is already setup for hot start performance
since the mixture contains a deactivating antibody as stated in the
manual. I have an experiment in which I compared hot start vs no hot
start on 7-13-13 (pg. 109) of a lab notebook, and there does not appear
to be any difference between the two conditions.
