One possibility is that the people with the disease who have lower
signals for those peptides were not able to produce antibody against
these epitopes.

One possibility is that the immune system may down-regulate antibodies to
these epitopes because antibodies against these epitopes may be a
disadvantage or at least not be optimal.

One example of this could be that having an antibody against a decoy

protein in the HIV protein would be a disadvantage. I thought I
remember Dennis R. Burton talking about such a decoy protein, but I
could be wrong. Note that some of the main proteins on the HIV virus
are gp41 and gp120
