Basic process for getting a virtual machine up and running on google compute engine
- create a windows virtual machine (if you want a GUI)
- go into the settings and change the username which will then bring up a prompt with the remote destkop password
- If you are using institution wifi you may need to connnect to the VPN with something like Cisco AnyConnect
- setup remote desktop for file transfer
Click "windows start" button, All programs, then Accessories and Click remote desktop connection
On the remote desktop window menu, enter server-name or IP adress of the server you want to access
Click on Options button, then go to local resources tab. one of the options (at the very bottom) is "local devices and resources"
click "more.... " button then Tick Drives and click "OK"
Click "connect" button to connect to the server of your choice.
On the remote PC, open my computer and you should be able to see hard drives of your local PC listed under the Other option

- remote desktop to the vm
- download firefox on the local computer and transfer the file to the remote computer
- install firefox
- use firefox to download and install the java jdk and eclipse
- now you should be good to go
